What is an Old Dominion Terrier?

An Old Dominion Terrier (ODT) is the cross between a Decker Line Rat Terrier (Decker), an American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff), and a Basenji.

Before we get more into this, we need to understand the difference between a Decker Line Rat Terrier and a Standard Rat Terrier.

The smaller framed, thinner boned Rat Terrier has Chihuahua among other breeds in their lineage. If you look at the old ancestry tree of the Rat Terrier as outlined by the Rat Terrier Club of America there is no Basenji anywhere in there.

Understanding Old Dominion Terriers

Deckers are a line of large Rat Terriers with Basenji among other breeds in their lineage. They are usually larger, bigger boned dogs that are less yappy due to the addition of the Basenji and tend to have a high prey drive. These larger sized Rat Terriers were first developed by Milton Decker and became known as Decker Rat Terriers. UKC recognized Decker Rat Terriers by formal registration and Mr. Decker left his work with the breed and requested that the UKC remove his family name from these dogs. Instead of the UKC just changing their name, they just removed the Decker Rat Terrier designation and simply listed them as Rat Terriers by UKC registration. Deckers should not have been registered as Rat Terriers because of the Basenji in their lineage and in doing so has confined us to breeding with Rat Terriers which over time due to the influence of the Chihuahua and other toy breeds in their lineage will diminish the size that we cherish in our Deckers.

The Old Dominion Terrier is a rare and special branch of the Rat Terrier family. The Old Dominion Terrier is not a new breed but rather a reintroduction of some of the foundational genetics that originally helped form the Decker Terrier. They have been in development by hunters and farmers since the late 1800’s. When English immigrants came to the States they brought these terrier crosses with them. They traced back to the original cross of Whippets, Fox Terriers, Beagles, and most recently the Basenji.

The goal of the Old Dominion Terrier breeding program is simple. We (the breeders) want to keep the temperament, look, and classic size that is known with a Decker but add new bloodlines that will promote good health, stable temperaments, and genetic diversity without having to outcross to standard Rat Terriers.

The addition of AmStaff brings in size, the larger bone structure, and an affinity for people and kids while the Basenji adds grace and elegance. While Old Dominion Terriers were originally bred as hunting dogs, today they stand as a proud preservation breed that honors history while thriving as a loyal, modern pet.

From my own experience raising Old Dominion Terriers, I can confidently say they bring the perfect balance of energy and affection. They love to run and play in the yard, but they’re just as happy curling up beside you at the end of the day.
